Pentimenti is thrilled to announce the digital restoration and re-release of 4 Films by Suzanne Simpson, a collection of long lost documentaries, each of which profiles an artist who spent formative time in California during the 1970s, including Mark di Suvero, Roy De Forest, Hassel Smith, and local legend Karl Wirsum, who was briefly a visiting instructor at the California State University Sacramento. Virtually unseen for over four decades, Simpson's whimsical quartet of archival films captures these artists flourishing amidst the 1970s Bay Area art scene, when Funk art was thriving. More details about upcoming screening dates will be available soon!
Karl Wirsum, which Pentimenti originally debuted in 2016, is now available to stream for free online. Wirsum's psychedelic marionette sculptures still dazzle today, while his narration and a new, mind-bending score by musicians Alex Inglizian and Marc Riordan—which was recently awarded "Best Original Soundtrack" at the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival—draws viewers into his process and personality.
