BENEATH THE SURFACE OF THE EVERYDAY

An observer of quotidian strangeness, Deb Sokolow creates semi-fictitious drawings and books commenting on architecture, politics, and pop culture. Shot on 16mm and adopting the style of 70s paranoid thrillers, the film traces the evolution of Sokolow’s speculative ethos, detailing a shadowy encounter at McDonald’s and her fixation with Rocky Balboa.

Plays in DOCUMENTARY SHORTS 1 - UNSEEN

Spanning ecological struggle, historical absurdities, and paranoid artistic visions, UNSEEN uncovers the strange and hidden forces shaping our relationship with the natural and human-made world. From the laborious rescue of obscure prairie species and the impact of resource extraction to a famous exploding whale and shadow-filled architectural conspiracy theories, these five non-fiction films blend the ethereal with the absurd to expose what lies just beneath the surface.
